Briefing on climate change and nuclear weapons (online)
Hosted by ICAN (Australia)
Register here
The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) Australia is holding a key national briefing (online) event to address two of the most pressing issues of our time: the threats posed by nuclear weapons and climate change.
Title: Rising Tensions, Rising Temperatures, Rising Tides
Speakers: A Prof Tilman Ruff AO (ICAN co-founder), Jemila Rushton (ICAN Australia Acting Director), Epeli Lesuma, Nuclear Justice Campaigner, Pacific Network on Globalisation (Fiji).
ICAN Australia is working to promote adherence to and full implementation of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). We believe that while nuclear weapons are held and produced by nations across the world, catastrophic danger remains for all of us and our climate.
The detonation of even a small number of nuclear weapons would cause devastating environmental effects, leading to global climate disruption, famines, nuclear winter, and widespread suffering. Furthermore, the production and testing of nuclear weapons have significant environmental impacts, including radioactive contamination and habitat destruction.
ICAN Australia is keen to collaborate with environmental groups to address these dual threats. By working together, we can amplify our voices and increase our impact. Some of our current environmental partners include Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, and the Australian Conservation Foundation. Together, we have been able to raise awareness about the environmental consequences of nuclear weapons and advocate for policies that protect both people and the planet.
Climate Changers, Community Film Screening
Hosted by Port Environment Centre
Tickets are $10 and include a free Candy Bar item, choose from a medium drink, a choc top or a small pop corn! Get tickets here
Join the Port Environment Centre for a Community Screening of Climate Changers - a new documentary featuring Tim Flannery on a search for leadership on climate change.
Strong leadership is essential to carry the world through to a sustainable and equitable future. CLIMATE CHANGERS follows Tim Flannery's search for leadership on climate change. Where are the leaders who will drive change and how might they succeed where others have failed? Tim poses these questions as he meets global leaders from the corridors of power and frontlines of climate change.
While the science is not in question, and we already know the solutions to climate change, finding the necessary leadership on this issue has proven elusive. Do we have the leaders to take us to a greener future?
Join us for a night out at the cinema to connect with community as we face these tough questions together, finding hope and inspiration through our resilience.
The film will be screening in one of the downstairs cinemas which has 2 wheelchair spots, however wheelchair access to the cinema is via an outside ramp and there is no disability access toilet on site. Our volunteers will be on hand at the event to ensure ease of access as far as possible. If you have any concerns regarding access please give us a call on 0488229925 to discuss.
The Port Environment Centre is seeded by Green Adelaide with additional funding from a City of Port Adelaide Enfield Living Environment Grant.

Protest Laws Mass Rally & Sit-down
Hosted by Extinction Rebellion SA & Extinction Rebellion Aus
Please RSVP here so we can send you more information with support and training available, and to find out about legal implications – you may be pleasantly surprised.
The SA Anti-Protest Laws, passed in May last year, penalise peaceful protest and undermine democratic rights for all.
Join us to mark the first anniversary of the passing of these draconian laws with a big, loud and inclusive rally at Parliament House, followed by an (optional) mass sit-down on the road.
Standing in the way of business as usual but staying completely peaceful and passive sends a message of love, defiance and alarm. It gives people an opportunity to reflect on their values, and for us all to tell the truth about what should be daily news.
We do not expect everyone to join in the sit-down part of this rally. If you choose not to sit down we’d love it if you could show support by staying on the side of the road and joining in cheering, chanting and singing for people who are making this powerful protest.
Now is the time for people to step into their courage, go a step further, and take the necessary action. So, if you think you are ready to be in resistance against this unjust, undemocratic system, or want to find out more, please register for updates and we will be in touch with further details.

Disrupt, Persist, Invent (until Aug 11)
Disrupt, persist, invent is an exhibition that explores the question ‘how do you change the world?’ through records held by National Archives of Australia.
It is about more than activism and activists. The world is changed in so many ways –through protests and demonstrations, but also through invention and innovation, elections, creating and promoting arts and culture, and making space for the marginalised in our community.
Using archival records, objects, audio-visual material and video portraits, the exhibition highlights 28 inspiring ways that Australians have changed the world and how the Commonwealth has responded to these social, political, and technological changes.
Australians in an ever-changing world. What does that mean? Come with us as we find out. Delving into National Archives’ collection, we discover stories not just of noisy protest, but also of innovation, creativity and quiet persistence.
Cosplay for Climate
Register here
Hosted by Extinction Rebellion
On this national day of action, people around Australia will dress as superheroes and take peaceful direct action. You ARE a climate superhero ... May the 4th be with you! Come as your favourite Climate SuperHero - be inventive or traditional, be fun and above all be Super.
Once you’ve registered we'll send you the start location where we'll gather for a briefing (undies on the outside are optional) then swoop through the city on a Mission to Expose and Humiliate Fossil Fuel Villains.
All other avenues have failed us. It’s time to rise up and defend the liveability of our planet. We do this with joy, creativity and disruption of business-as-usual. It’s time to sound the alarm and disrupt the death machine.
We demand an emergency speed transition, faster than the Flash, into zero emissions and biodiversity protection.
The Power of Protest: Young People’s Climate Action (until July 30)
SS4C and AYCC present a free exhibition
The Power of Protest: Young People’s Climate Action is a new display in the Centre of Democracy. The display features placards made by students for the school strikes in October 2021 alongside photos of the protests taken by photographer Neville Cichon.
The School Strike 4 Climate (SS4C) movement in Australia coordinated Friday school strike action around the country in 2021 to allow young people the chance to be heard by policy makers. It is a part of the international movement that has seen millions of school students around the world take to the streets. Through the strikes, students use people power to have an impact on public opinion and decision makers. Active citizenship, in this case in the form of public protest, is one way that youth who want to engage in the political landscape can have an impact before they turn 18.
Placards are a succinct and creative way to share an individual voice within a mass action. Come in to the gallery to see not only the placards made by students, but to read, in their words, why they chose their message and why they joined the protest.

National Week of Antipoverty Action
Last years budget saw the government toss people in poverty some spare change from their surplus, it barely made a dent to the cost of living that people in poverty are being left to weather while the rich get richer.

A collective of antipoverty groups are coordinating events both on online and in person to raise awareness and get a straight answer out of politicians, we're demanding.
1. Increase all payments to at least the Henderson Poverty Line
2. End punitive mutual obligations and stop cutting payments
3. Large scale public housing
We'll be hosting both online and in person events to begin the push.
Stay up to date by clicking ‘Going’ to this Facebook Event and turning on notifications.
