The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) Australia is holding a key national briefing (online) event to address two of the most pressing issues of our time: the threats posed by nuclear weapons and climate change.

Title: Rising Tensions, Rising Temperatures, Rising Tides
Speakers: A Prof Tilman Ruff AO (ICAN co-founder), Jemila Rushton (ICAN Australia Acting Director), Epeli Lesuma, Nuclear Justice Campaigner, Pacific Network on Globalisation (Fiji).

ICAN Australia is working to promote adherence to and full implementation of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). We believe that while nuclear weapons are held and produced by nations across the world, catastrophic danger remains for all of us and our climate.

The detonation of even a small number of nuclear weapons would cause devastating environmental effects, leading to global climate disruption, famines, nuclear winter, and widespread suffering. Furthermore, the production and testing of nuclear weapons have significant environmental impacts, including radioactive contamination and habitat destruction.

ICAN Australia is keen to collaborate with environmental groups to address these dual threats. By working together, we can amplify our voices and increase our impact. Some of our current environmental partners include Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, and the Australian Conservation Foundation. Together, we have been able to raise awareness about the environmental consequences of nuclear weapons and advocate for policies that protect both people and the planet.
